This material is really neat! The iron minerals (hematite and goethite) that give the crystal the red brown color are a pseudomorph after calcite. This means that originally there were calcite crystals that the hematite-goethite replaced but kept the original structure of. And then later on, another layer of calcite grew over that. This is why it has such a unique appearance!
